The Vigor in the Initial Stages of Sugarcane Selection
Main Article Content
Abstract
Vigor is one of the characters valued in the selection of initial stages in sugarcane. The methodology to be followed in its determination has not been specified in Cuba yet; however, vigor determination constitutes the main cause for discrimination in these stages. In order to clarify this problem, a study of the papers published on the work developed in countries having efficient breeding programs such as Australia, Brazil, Colombia and the United States was carried out. This study involved the concept of vigor and its relation to agricultural yield up to its use in early selection stages in a way that would allow updating and optimizing the procedures of the Cuban program for obtaining new cultivars. Further research and specific projects were recommended in order to advance this topic and thus facilitate the implementation of some physiological indicators closely related to agricultural yield and consequently to vigor
